Day # 272 Grading day

Thursday

Today was basically a day off for me, it is teacher grading day and because I don't grade any of the students I didn't have to come in to school. So instead I went to the beach again. I had a small picnic and swam sat along the shore with the waves crashing up on me. I was exited that I was getting to spend so much time with Penut. He is feeling so much better from his tick fever. It was a lazy day for the most part. When I got home I took a nap before dance class. I really to love my Latin dance class, it is so much fun and some of my best local friends from Grenada are their. After class me and two of my friends went home and cooked a big pot of Pilow (rice, chicken and juice). Just as the pot was finishing up the gas ran out :( ohhhh that sucked. Friday is a public holiday so I cant go and get any tomorrow. Thank goodness for bread and cheeses. It was a late night just up talking and hanging out.

Day # 271 Special ED Training

Wednesday

I need to find someone in my school who is going to communicate with me on what all of these events are and when. I am so tiered of showing up to school and it being a public holiday NO school, or trainings that are not called trainings. They called today teacher development day but did not give me any specifics on what that was. I was not informed and I missed it. Si I talked to a teacher at my school and he told me what they talked about and caught me up. They talked about implementing a new low involving incident reports. Any ways I didn't do a hole lot. I worked around the house and went to the beach with soca and penut. I wanted to introduce the two of them. It was a good first try. They did ok Socas so small compared to Penut so she was a but scared. My friend also moved into a new apartment so we went and hung out with her for a little bit.

Day # 269 &270 Another small cold

Monday

I feel like since I have been in Grenada my colds have hit me at the worst times. This week school is only in session two and a half days, due to trainings for teachers and grading day. Sunday night before I went to bed I started to feel a head ache coming so I thought maybe I was dehydrated, I drank a bunch of water and took some IB Pro-fin. When I woke up this morning I had the worst headache behind my eyes that I didn't even want to open my eyes. I took some more IB Pro-fin and drank some more water. I had no change a half and hour latter so I had to call in for that day. I did nothing but keep a cool cloth on my eyes all day. It was not a productive day at all. I hate those days. I couldn't even paint bottles.

Tuesday

I dont understand how I went from a headache to a runny nose, scratchy eyes and throat. It was another day in bed doing nothing. Rain has been falling so much here I am wondering if that has something to do with e getting sick so much. In Grenada people believe that several things will make you sick, sleeping with wet hair, or being out in the rain. I got to bed all of the time with wet hair and walk in the rain because its so hot here that I feel the need to cool off. Who knows maybe some of what I think are their myths are true and it just depends on the place you are.

Day # 268 and 269 rest and beach

Saturday

so I am one of those people who have to get 8 hours of sleep to function properly, because we where out so late or should I say early in the morning, I had to catch up on some sleep. Thats what I did most of the day. When I got up it was a lazy day watched some movies and played with the dog.

Sunday

I took the dog to the beach and discovered that she can swim. Wow she is a good swimmer and I dont think that i have ever seen a dog learn to swim so fast. You just put them in and they are off. People in the states say that some dogs cant swim,  JUST PUT THEM IN!!!!! Soca flowed me around in the water for like 30 min. Mind you she is small I had to keep the rope on her so she would not float away. It was a good day, Nothing much ells followed.  besides more rest.

Day # 267 ONE at a Time

Friday

I am trying a new approach to the bottle painting at white cane. Due to the fact that nothing has been sold yet and they have the basic ideas down I want to start working on sellable bottles. So I had two people that day that I was working with. Each one got a bottle and told me that they wanted to work on nutmegs. So I decided that we are going to work on one bottle for each person every friday. I think if we can get one bottle ready to be sold or almost ready we will be starting to make progress. So we went step by step with colors and cleaning up each thing that they painted. I was so exited to see some of the finished bottles and even the ones that where close. I think it made a big difference in helping them learn and getting the job done.

when I went home it was relaxing and then getting ready to go and dance. Me and my dance partner have been getting to much better at dancing together and and adding some new moves. It feels good to be improving. After we danced the group went to the beach and had a cook out. oh man I saw one of the biggest bots of pilow (rice, cooked chicken, split pees)  I have ever seen in my life. We had a small speaker that we plugged a flash drive into ad played music. It was so much fun if you looked at us as a group from far away you would know we were a dance group, all of us dancing around and showing off are moves. When we were all hot we got in the nice cool water. It was a fun and supper late night on the beach.

Day# 266 Home visit

Thursday

Today the schools rally that the teachers could attend if they wanted to. I decided that I was going to go because I was not going to be teaching anyways that day and I had a home visit later that day. In the morning I did some finishing touches to the apartment, it was a very hot day onside. When I started asking what the rally or convention was that I had thought about going to it became something I was not interested in. The credit unions around town came to talk to the teachers, not really my kind of thing especially when I was going to be sitting in the hot sun. I didn't end up going. But When it was time for my home visit I was really exited to get and sit and talk about what I had been up to, how things where going and such. I felt like I was abel to be completely honest and get good feedback. It was like a two and a half hour meeting. When that was over I took a short nap and got ready for dance class. Oh man dance class was good. We are learning to much, but being repetitive so we are good at what we are doing. It was a grate night.

Day #265 Division

Wednesday

School has become interesting, in some classes they don't want me to teach arts and crafts they want me to help them doctorate the classroom. this is understandable some of the time but I don't want them to make a routine out of it because that is not what I am their for. So today I was in the level 2 classes. I helped the teachers draw bats, pumpkins and witches. I found this to be interesting because people in Grenada don't really celebrate Hollowed. I discovered yesterday talking to one of the teachers that the school that I am at has a big divide between the senior and joiner teachers. Everything is a competition, even who works in the garden can become a conflict between staff. That is why teachers made it a big deal to see who can have the best decorated classroom. Its like walking threw high school all over agin, people in clicks all over the place gossiping and being immature. I don't understand but I am new so maybe some day I will understand. Any ways it was a long day of sitting and cutting out stuff. After school no a hole lot happened I finished cleaning and washing cloths for the inspection tomorrow.

Day # 264 Finally a field trip to the beach

Tuesday

Let me tell you getting this field trip set up has been a pain in my butt, mainly because I don't have support from the principal at my school. Any ways she switched the date of the field trip because of some event going on in the school, so today when I got their I was so exited because we where supposed to go. The bus was not their yet and when I asked where it was she said oh i guess you'll have to plan it for another day. Well its not that simple because then I have to go threw her agin and she has to go threw the ministry of education to get the bus. So I called the bus driver, he didn't answer so I kept calling him. Finally I asked if I had the right number and I called agin. When I got ahold of him he pretended like he had forgotten that the principle of the school had just told him about it. I told him plain out I know she just told you about it! He finally came back to get us at about 10am. Their is so much I would like to say about him but I will refrain from doing so I am ranting enough. So then we had to pick 18 kids to come, thats all the bus would hold. One of the students is in a wheel chair but uses a walker and did not have the wheelchair today. So I said we can still bring her and place her in the a chair, she can still help. The principle said she cant walk in the sand with her walker. I told her the plan and she did not stop me after that. So we were on are way to the beach I was so exited. The kids had so much fun, we where their for an hour looking for sea glass for the mosaic and talking about how  it was made. When we got back I got spoken to about why I was not supposed to take the girl with the walker. She has a nurse that comes for her to help her go to the bathroom. I didn't know that, her teacher didn't say anything and nether did the principal. I was very frustrated I felt like I was getting road blocked from every direction. I am surprised I have lasted as long as I have at the school many a peace corps volunteer has left their for reasons I will not mention.

Any ways so during lunch I went down to the gift shop that I got my bottles in. They loved them!! It was so exiting. I got to organize them on a shelf and explain them too. It was a good feeling. I cant wait to paint some more, I hope they start selling soon. I have them in to places a gift shop and a resort has them up on friday nights.

On my way home I stopped at the store to get some things. I am finding all of these new grocery stores that I knew about but had not shopped at. I now understand why people go different places to get different things. I am going to go home and cook some dinner and start to clean some more.

Thank you for letting me vent, I try very hard not to put negative things on my blog but for those of you who think I am on what they call Beach Corps holiday here is a is a bit of what I go threw on a daily basis, with people I work with. Their is so much stuff like that that i dont share. But today I needed to put it in here, let some off my chest.

Day # 263 Vet (Tick Fever)

Monday

So today I had to take off work because my first baby Penut is very sick and I had to take him to the vet. He contracted tick fever and bleeding internally. Let me tell you dogs here in grenada are so delicate, they get worms, heart worms, tick fever and they even have a sexually transmitted deceases. Any ways I did not have him when he got sick, because if you remember about 2 months ago my landlord said that I could not have him. So I found a person who had a car that was willing to transport my dog to and from his home and by the vet. Thank goodness we know a bet who does it out of her home but can still do blood work. So we didn't even have to take him out of the car, she did blood work and gave him pills right their. When she took his blood it was like red water. Not thick at all., and he was anemic, he had white gums. Poor thing was so sick, I don't know how long he had been like that before I got him back. Any ways we started him on antibiotics (Doxiciclin) and he started to get better right after that thank goodness. He will be on that for about 6 weeks. When that was over we took him home and gave him a good bath and fixed him soft food. He is back with the breeder and best friends of the person who gave Penut to me, so I will be seeing him more and keeping up better with his health. It was a long day. When I got home I started washing some cloths and cleaning up the house a bit before bed.

Day # 262 Around the island agin

Saturday

It was an early morning, but I hoped out of beg to get ready. Today is the island tour with Steph and her visitors. I am we are also taking some boys with us. One who is a local that has never been on an island tour. You might ask well hes a local why would he need to go on an island tour, well he had never been to some of the water falls, the rum factory or the chocolate factory before I took him to go do some of those things. Well today was more laid back we went to the Belmont Chocolate factory and we walked around and had a coke while the visitors where on the tour. One of Stephs gust has a muscle disability is in a wheelchair, it was really nice that we could do so much because it was accessible. After the chocolate factory we went by Max another volunteers house and he had made home made lasagna and salad for us. It was so nice, when we where done eating Steph and Max played the guitar and sang us some songs. Some of us played along with the drum that was hand crafted in grenada by their teacher. From their it was a nice drive threw the mountains on the other side of the island. Oh it was a good day and I was pooped after that long drive. I relaxed after that and before bed.

Day # 261 Cooking pots

Saturday

I slept in. When I got up and got ready to go and see Penut. We spent a lot of the day with him. We gave him a bath and cooked him a big pot of food. The boys also cooked us a big pot of pasta and ground corn beef that was good. It was a laid back kind of day. When I got home it was basically straight to bed to watch movies and sleep.

Day # 260 Guest

Friday

This morning I got to meet some of my other Peace Corps volunteers visiting friends. We all went to white cane for the morning. So I worked with some of my students with salt dough its kind of like clay, lots of people use it for christmas ornaments and such. I thought that maybe we could make some nutmeg ornaments, pendants, and magnets and some other stuff. It was a bit crazy I was working with Steph's guests on painting a bottle and I was working with the others on the salt dough while trying to clean up some of my bottles so they could possibly be sold that night at Dogy Dock where I also happen to dance at. I got everything all done that day I was surprised. When I got home I ate dinner and then got ready to go dancing. We had a grate night at the resort. Me and my dance partner were on are game that night. It was also exiting to have the other group member back dancing with us. So we went out as a big group after to the Spice Basket. Such a good night lots of energy and fun. It was a late night but worth it.

Day # 259 ooppps

Thursday

was a good day, when I got to work I was expecting to not have to teach the older students until the end of the day, because the teachers switched when I would be teaching that day. When I got their the main teacher was working with them on arts and crafts. Some times it can be so frustrating  that they say one thing and do another. Apparently they had not gotten it approved by the principle, oh well what can ya do. Any ways it was an interesting day at work I did not to much. When I got home I took a nap and headed to dance class. That was one of the best dance classes that I have had in a long time. The old teacher, my first teacher cam back. He and my new teacher thought the class and it was grate. Then we had practice after for the Steeping Out Dance Group. I had a grate night, wonderful stress reliever.

Day # 258 shooting star

Wednesday

Its the middle of the week and today is the tinny tikes level 2. They didn't bring in any supplies so we just finished their masks. As I was cutting out one of the mask one of the little boys pointed to the glitter on my lap and said shooting star, he is the same one who said look miss and when I looked it was a booger. Man some of these kids have so much personality its amazing. I spent all day with the munchkins and in the computer lab looking up new ideas, I am trying to plan in advance based on the materials that we have. This semester is going much better than I thought it would. When I got home I called one of the resorts in town that I love and asked if they were looking for some new art. They asked for me to send some pictures, and I did so now I am waiting to see what happens. They own several gift shops around town so I really would like to make this link. Who knows.
Step one- glue then glitter. Let it dry and then trace the mask and cut it out.
Not much ells going on tonight just painting and eating before bed.

Day # 257 Money boxes

Tuesday

This week I asked all of the teachers o ask their kids to bring in some supplies but as I learned that was not enough time so I had to come up with something ells to do. One of the teachers had asked that we make some kind of money box for the kids so they could start saving for christmas. So I had a stencil cut out and and I had the kids make their boxes. Next class they will decorate them. The day was kind of long and drawn out but in my second class we finished their masks and I had the kids put them on and take a picture. I am sad that class is so short but their is nothing I can do, all the other times are taken. When I got home I changed my cloths and headed back out into town I wanted to get a small pizza for dinner and start some early Christmas shopping. That went really well I got some nice thing. When I was done with that I went to pick up my first dog Penut and move him to a better location. He was being eaten alive by ticks. So he went back to his siblings. Its a bit of a change but he will still be a pet, be around lots of kids and people that love him. All get to see him more as well. Hopefully we can do sundays on the beach agin. It was a good night.

Day # 256 Colors, paint by numbers, and sad with glue

Monday

This morning I started off by trying to find something useful for the kids to do and I ran across a paint by numbers so I decided that I would give that a try. When I got to class we started with finishing the first letters of their names by using liquid glue and drizzling it all over their letters and then adding sand to it from the beach. I think that they liked the feeling of putting their hand into the bucket of sand and feeling it run threw their fingers. They turned out really nice. We then moved to pain by numbers. Some of the kids understood and some did not. I just broke it down by number and we did one at a time. I think that it worked out good. Nothing much happened after school at home, I started painting a new bottle so we will see how that turns out.

Day # 255 Lets run

Sunday,

I woke up to a puppy running circles around the house. That to me was a clear sign that I needed to take the little Soca monster out to play. She had never been out of the house for a walk or to the beach because she was way way to small. Anyways I put her on a leash and headed up to the top road so she could walk. Lone and behold she is still a bit to small to walk on a leash down a street but we will get their. So I put her in my favourite place to put puppies, in my purse. She fits grate. So I walked down to the playing field near my house and let her go. She followed me around and ran around after the boll I brought. I am so exited for her to get bigger so I can go walking in the evening with her or in the mornings when it is cool out side. I think she had a grate time. when we go home I took her into the bathroom and put her under the pipe and let cool water run on her. She laid on her back in my hands and let the water run down her tummy. It was so funny. I thought she would like that. Then she went outside and laid in the sun silly little thing. latter that day I met up with my new dance group and we worked on some masks. It was just three of us and they wanted us to get 100 done by the end o the month. I don't think that we will be getting that far, and most of the ones that we did wont be able to get sold. I think it was just a practice day so I am hoping they get better. When we where done we took a swim in the sea. I didn't like it because you had to crawl over rocks and slide into the water. When I was in the water I was ten told to watch out for sea urchins. Well that's not something that I want to deal with, so I tried to get out. That took me a long time because I was scared to touch anything with my feet or hands on the side of the rocks. I was scared. So I will not be swimming their any more. When I got home I finished up some bottles I was proud of myself I got a god few finished, and some started. I think I am very close to being ready to submit my work into a shop.

Day # 254 Sleep

Saturday

Ok so today was one of those much needed days of sleep and watching movies in bed. I know what you all are thinking I have heard from others what you say. Yes I am still a peace corps worker but some times I need a mental brake. I had a good day I loved being lazy. I did now ever do dome dishes and wash come cloths along with my slow day. Because this is such a boring post I will give you all a food recipe. Cheese pie (Like mac and cheeses)

Day # 253 Re-touch

Friday

Now that the people at white cane are starting to understand all of the steps of bottle making and mixing paint for the most part I am trying to get them working on a few designs and prefect them so we can start getting the bottles sold. So I had the class go over some of the bottles with solid colors as backgrounds so that way we can start putting the designs on. I have four main students that I work with. The class seams to be getting bigger and better. When I got home I cleaned up the house a bit and got ready for dancing at the resort. I was so exited as a group we try to match, the color of the night was yellow and I had a yellow dress. I like to get dressed up and go out and dance. Me and my dace partner took a but and got drooped off a little bit before Dogy Dock where we dance,  and started to walk. As we where walking some people (tourists) stopped and asked us if we knew where the Dogy Dock resort was so we told them and they offered us a ride. It saved us about a 20min walk. I know its strange and not done very often in the states, but in Grenada a lot of people give rides and get rids from one another. Some of the peace corps even hitchhike. I do not!! But it just happened that we ran into a man and woman who knew where they where heeded and we where going the same direction. Also If I had been alone I would have said no, but I had a friend with em. Any ways they ended up coming to eat dinner and watched the dancing.  Dogy had so much energy it was so much fun. From their we all garbed food and headed down to the Spice Basket. I had not been in a while so I decided to go but it was slow their.  got tiered so fast, when I got home I was exited to go to bed.

Day # 252 Garden

Thursday

Today I was prepared for my last day of mask making with the older kids but some plans got switched and we ended up going to work out in the garden. Once upon a time we supplied some produce to some of the local resorts and local supper markets. The garden got over grown over the past year and crops didn't make it over the summer. So we had the kids weed in and around the rows so that we can get to planting some new things. Well all of this got me thinking. I would love to make walk way out of cement and and mosaic them. I started thinking about wind chimes, wind meals, rain measurers and bird houses. So maybe in my fundraising for my sea glass treeI can get just a few more dollars and get an extra bag of cement so I can make the garden walk way. It was fun working on the garden with all of the kids. When I got home I had a gust from St. David who had come to help me cook, she brought her doughtier that is one and a half, she was so cute. We cooked a big meal and ate until we where going to berst. The food was so good, and we all had a nice time.

Day # 251 Look miss

Wednesday

Terrible 2s with glitter and glue wow did I make a mess for myself. It was fun none the less. I had the kids squeeze out glue onto their papers. I helped them move the glue bottle around. When we where done I sprinkled glitter onto them. This is going to be the design on their masks. Thank goodness I have two teachers and a mom that can help me get everything done. It was fun. The teachers loved it so much they asked if they could make one and have one to take home for their kids. During break I had one of the small little boys come up to me. "miss look" "Miss look". He showed me his finger, I thought he hurt himself, but no he was showing me a nice booger. I loved it and thought it was so funny so I told him to go show his teacher. So funny how different things are see lol. I spent the rest of my day cutting out 30 masks and 60 strings for thursdays class, wow was that not fun. But I am happy that I got all of the prep work done. OH and I am so exited I now in the past I have talked about doing a mosaic on the school wall out of sea glass well I found out that I think we got the filled trip all worked out to the beach. WOW was I impressed that happened. So now I need to do a bit of fundraising to get some cement for the tiles and to put the sea glass into on the school walls. Im so happy about that I didn't think it was going to happen.  Any ways I am exited because Steph is coming home from here one moth venation in the states. Its been a good day.

Day # 250 Masks

Tuesday

Its a mask kind of week I think. My first class of the day is level 3 I was exited to see what these kids would do. I used the same idea I used yesterday except for with some of the kids that could not cut the photos I had them rip them. It caused a nice effect on some of them. It was hard getting the kids to fill up all of the paper, but I was starting to prefect how I was teaching this craft. I gave them a sheet of paper that was just big enough for the mask to be traced on. That way they where not wasting paper or any other materials. Then when it came to the string for the mask the teacher did not like what I had brought so I went to get something different. We ended up bradding some yarn that I found. I will tell you one thing the teachers down here are very competitive of one another, want everything perfect, dress to the T, and gossip like no other. Its hard some times to work with them because on top of all of those things they are very blunt and forceful as well. But any ways it turned out to be a good class. I had lunch and then it was time for my next class. I dont have much time with them only about 30min but the teacher wont give or help me make time, so it is what it is. I worked with them on masks as well. We didn't get much finished so I had to take them home and cut them out.

When I got home I was in a painting mood so I started one new 3d bottle ith jelly fish and a red bottle with purple jelly fish. I really love those bottles. Painting and bloging have become a new stress reliever for me or just a way to express how I am feeling.

Day # 249 Working out ok

Monday

I started off working with the level one classroom . They where the first class to get to try out my masks. I had them color on paper plates and then when they where done I traced out a mask. I then cut eye holes and placed strings on the sides so that they could where them if they wanted to. Some of the kids did not want anything on their faces at all and thats fine, they did such a nice job I thought that would make a nice wall ornament or something. Then I continued on to level four with masks as well. In the last box my grandma sent she put in some magazine pictures with designs and art on them. It was so perfect because I just picked out one for each child and had them cut it up. Last time I had a group of kids looking in magazines it didn't go so well, they picked out some interesting things. Any ways this was so perfect and made some very interesting designs. Also thank goodness for having some of my own glue sticks that travel with me from class to class, it makes it so much smother when I have my own stuff and don't have so ask to borrow teachers personal things. It was a good day. All and all this few weeks is working out ok :)

Day # 248 Bug bites I hate you

Sunday

Sunday when I woke up I started to clean up the home and wash some cloths. All day I walked around scratching all over. I think that I looked like a monkey. They love to bite my stomach and inner thigh. I also sweat so much that it gets irritated even more. It was a slow itchy day. I was exited thought because I started trying to paint match boxes. They can be made into little boxes so I was really exited to try that out. They worked out ok but I need to prefect that some more.

Day # 247 Its hot

Saturday

It was a hot morning but good. When I got up I hoped in the cold shower like I am culturally not suppose to do because they say you'll have a heart attack, but I was so sweaty and hot I needed to cool off and lets face it the waster is not that could. Anyways it was felt amazing. When I was done I went into the kitchen and cleaned up a bit before I made French toast. Oh how I discovered forgotten foods. I made scrambled eggs with peppers, and cabbage. It was a nice mix of salty and sweet. When I was done eating breakfast I got ready to head into the country to have lunch with my friends family. The bus ride is long but I don't find it boring. I love to look at the different people and watch the county as it passes. When I got to his moms house the first thing I do is put sunscreen on and bug spray. They have what you call sand flies in the country. Small little bugs that bight, not so much fun. After the country lunch I headed back home for a relaxing evening at home.
