Day #183 Future Planing Day

Thursday 7/25/13
This morning the girls where so tiered they did not want to get up for yoga but once we got out their they seamed to enjoy it. After we changed, and ate breakfast it was time for the AM assembly. Each day a different group had to lead the assembly sing songs, and read a bit a scripture or inspirational quotes. It gives each group responsibility and a chance to pick songs. When that was over we made circles so that when are guests got their were ready for them. Today we had woman from different fields of work come to talk to the girls. They first introduced them selfs and then the girls could ask any questions that they wanted in a 10mi. We had a police woman, Manager at a resort, graphic designer, the education desk, council for the disabled. It was such a grate way for the girls to see what opportunities are out their and here what kinds of problems they might run into but how they can overcome them. They loved it. Latter that day it was time for cake decorating, we where having a compassion between the groups. We had to pick a piece of paper out of a bowl with themes on them. We pulled wedding, so we selected a heart shaped cake and are theme was Love Glows. We thought it was grate because the camp is called camp glow. We won most creative. It was a long day. We had dinner and then went into the crafts free time room. People played guitar, made friendship bristliest, did nails and played with each others hair. It was a good night the girls where finally starting to follow rules and get to know one another. It was still a late night for me before bed. Also one of my friends that I asked to be a councilor had to leave so that added a lot of stress to me. On the good side she left here bedding and said that I could use it so I did and it was very fluffy and comfy.
It was a long day, frustrating at times, hard at others but I was making new friends and helping some wonderful girl.

Day # 182 Lets get started ladies (Self Discovery Day)

Wednesday 7/24/13

DAY 2

WOW, I did not bring the right things to sleep on, my back, hips, shoulders and neck are so so so sore. Any ways the cap councilors got up at 6am to get showered and organized for the girls. At 6:30am the girls where to get up brush their teeth, and change for yoga. It was my first yoga class along with a lot of the other girls. Ohhhhh man did they not want to get up or do yoga. But we got them all out their on the field. I loved it it made my back feel so good and the rest of my body. When that was done at 8am we got the girls changed and off to breakfast, we had fish cakes, bakes and juice. The day was about to get more intense. Part of Camp GLOW is that we have specific sessions set up for the girls with guest speakers. The first one was about body image and shadeism. In Grenada some people believe that the darker you are the lower class you are, and people started bleaching their skin. The girls talked a lot about how they felt about that. Then they where given pictures of black woman and they where asked to create a made up store about the women based on their appearance. That was very interesting. This is a picture of the girls telling the stories they came up with as a group.
The next thing we did was watched a movie called Music By Prudence. Oh my god it was such an amazing empowering sad movie, so many of the girls cried. The reason we watched this movie was to ope the eyes of the girls about people with disabilities. We where so honored to have a few of the girls around the island that have disability, both physical and cognitive. Any ways the movie is about a woman in Africa that starts a bad of all disabled people in her community. Its a hardship because people think that she is worthless and she fights to prove them other wise, I have provided a link at the bottom of this post I REALY encourage you to look at it!!!!   We then moved onto a grate presentation from Alli another peace corps volunteer. She did helpful and hurtful. This went over how to use body language, tone of voice, words and much more to communicate with people. It was a grate thing to end the day with. We moved on to dinners and showers. I will tell you that it is incredibly hard to get girls from all walks of life to like each other, work together and follow interactions. We had a few girls break down, want to go home, or just had not broken out of their shells yet. Stressful let me tell you to have little sleep, be sore and have to deal with teenage girls. My group the Originators was made up of three staff and five girls. They didn't want to follow instructions, stay together or listen to anyone. But we did end up going to bed around ten even though, light are out at nice. Then I had a staff reflection meeting that went till about 11. Wow that was a long day!!!!!!!!!

Day # 181 First day of camp Glow

Tuesday 7/23/13

I'm back and going to update my posts, I know you are all glad to here that!!!!!!!

DAY 1.

I started off the day gathering all of my bags and going up stairs to help Steph with all of here guitars. We caught a buss and filled up the first seat of the hole buss with all of are stuff and headed up to Wester Hall Secondary. We got their at 9am and we had to organize, clean and get stuff put together for when the girl campers arrived. About 3pm the girls arrived and we had a short meeting to get all of the rules and groups put together. When that was done it was time to unpack and get ready for dinner. I think that the first night was the hardest due to the fact that each girl was so different from the next. Also they were not used to are rules and most of them had never been away from home for a over night camp. When we where done with dinner we had a bit of games, showers and then it was light. Wow was that a challenge, five minuet showers and then getting them all to sleep. I had brought 2 sheets, 2 yoga mats and a pillow to sleep on thinking that was enough.

Day # 180 Have to give him away

Monday 7/ 22/ 13

Today was a good day I went back to white cane to work on some more bottles. The people are really enjoying my class, asking me how to do things, how they look, what I think? Its so much fun. I also tried a new style of bottle for myself. It was a good day so far. Then I got a call from my boss at the Peace Corps saying that we needed to have a meeting because my landlord didn't like my dog selection. So I went to the office and the head director for the caribbean was there, she was coming already to see how everyone is doing down here, and then my boss. They told me that I could not keep my puppy!!! It was a nice meeting and I completely understand, and will do what is necessary. But man its hard to give away your baby, who you trained, picked up poop vomit and little peepee puddles. I had learned to late in the game how the people here feel about pit bulls, to me I was rescuing him from life in a box or a fighting ring. To others I had adopted a killing machine, and a blood sucker. I just think its so sad that people have to judge a breed of dog and not what it becomes. Ohhhh if you all only knew how much time I spent with him, taking him for walks, going to see people at the beach, working on commands (sit, stay, lay down) He is going to be a sweet heart. I just have o find the right home for him so he will get the same amount of love that I am giving him. Any ways I will do just that find him a grate home. After that I went and got read to got up to dance class just so I can drop off a bottle that I painted for Discover magazine. I have a friend their so I wanted to surprise him with it. When I got their he was so exited that he put it on a shelf right away. Makes me feel so good when people like my work.  Anyways I learned 3 new line dances tonight, it was a grate class and stress reliever. Now its time to go home and pack for my one week camp GLOW. So I will be away from the blog 8 days but I will catch up when I get home. So see yall in a few days. Also thank you mom, grandma and grandpa I raised the most money in the group equaling $550EC, Love you all.

Day # 179 New music

Sunday 7/ 21 /13

Today was another lazy weekend but I did find a program online that converts youtube videos into mp3's. So I spent a lot of my day playing with my music. I added my new songs to my iPod. Music is a big part of the culture down here so it was nice to be able to get some of the local Grenadian songs. My ITunes is confused my my credit card, because I have it set up that the home address is Arizona but I am using it here in Grenada so its very confused. So its nice to be able to get new music.  I learned the other day that the new phones work here in the caribbean, they take sim cards like we use here. A lot of the people in the peace corps have them because they an get wifi, and use the phone. Its important to have a phone that hooks up to wifi so we can get emails from work on them while we are around town. They also take grate picks I have seen. One of the girls here has a waterproof case and she is starting a vlog ( Video blog) I thin thats cook. Any ways I got to skype with my mom for a good long time and that was really nice. Its grate to here her voice and get to here about whats going on in my home town. A little latter I went down to the beach with some friends, it was cool outside and relaxing.

Day #178 Dance Camp

Saturday 7/20/13

This morning I had to get up and get ready, I was asked to be the photographer for Stephanie's dance camp performance. The camp has been going on for about four summers now and this was the first year that had a mix of girls including special ed. They were fantastic, this year a local woman from Grenada came back from NY to help out with the camp and get funding, she was a bit success. After the performance was over they had refreshments in the lobby. It was a very nice show. When I got home I had to finish making deviled eggs because  I was taking them to a little salsa dance party with a few friends. I got there at seven and we ate and had some drinks and danced on the veranda right in front of the beach. It was nice to here the waves crashing and have the cool breeze. It was just a small get together but a grate mix of people. It was a really fun night.

Day # 177 Big snail

Friday 7/19/13

Today I worked some more with the people at white cane, but today was nice because we had the under coat painted and dried so they could start drawing the pictures they wanted and painting. I was working with one young man who is high functioning, artistic and loves to lear so he was perfect to help. He decided that he was going to do a nutmeg bottle. It was so awesome because when I would tell him something he would listen and understand why I was having him do it. His bottle really came together. On my way home I happened to find a huge snail. I love snails, not because of sponge bob either. Since I was little I used to collect them and feed them so now when I find big ones or colored ones I have to p
ick them up for old time sake. When I got home I had to hurry to start and get dinner ready for the boys. I was having two friends over for dinner, I made pasta salad, deviled eggs and brought worst with caramelized onions. I was so exited when  found those in the store it was like a small reminder of the US.  The boys really liked my US dinner, its fun to share some of my dishes with them, because down here I eat Grenadian food and thats that they are used to. It was a good evening.

Day # 176 Grenada National Disabilities Counsel

Thursday 7/18/13

This morning I was provided with an amazing opportunity of teaching a painting class to White Cane. White cane where people with disabilities go and create paintings, basket weavings, t shirts and more to cell around the community. Stephanie one of the other Peace Corps works their and asked if I would like to teach. When I got their we went to get supplies for all of the people. When I got back it was like an assembly line to get all of the bottles cleaned off, and the white under coat put on. That took us most of the day. We have a challenge of making 60 bottles to make back what we spent on materials and to gain some profit. It was so amazing to be working with that group of people, so much fun and excitement. On my ways home I decided to stop and get some fish. I was so exited to try soothing new. I don't know why but I have really gotten to like fish. So I saw a really big fish asked what kind of meet and bones it had and claimed him as my dinner. When I got home I had to take care of my sick little puppy I think he got a parasite and the medication we gave him has some side effects to it. It was a long night. I also cut up my fish and seasoned and bagged it for individual dinners over the week. Mom did teach me the art of buying in bloke, separating and freezing it.

Day # 175 Seven Sisters Falls

Wednesday 7/17/13

Well early this morning  at about 3am the power went out and the fan went off. I woke up because I was supper hot, thank goodness it turned back on in an hour. I went back to bed before I re woke up to get ready to go and meet Bridget one of the other Peace Corps Volunteers in Gran Etang to go hiking. I think the bus ride was what took the longest, we had to wait at the bus terminal until the bus filed up with people that took us 30min and then the bus ride to get to the trail was another 30 min. Finally we made it to the trail got are walking sticks. we headed down the trail, i would say that it was not to difficult, I would suggest sneakers or hikers sandals for the grip on the rocks but be ready to get a little muddy and maybe rained on, pulse you can swim at the water falls. It took us about 30min to walk down the trail and up to the main two water falls, their is seven but most of them are really small and the hike is at a ninety degree angel from what the tour guide said. The two water falls that we stopped at are the biggest and most beautiful of the sisters. So we had lunch and swam in the water. Some locals showed up and started diving off of the water fall, that was fun to watch, and then some tourists came so we talked to them for a while. It was a good day. We left around 3pm, when I got home I mad a fast dinner watched a movie and went to bed.

Day # 174 Move ur Mas

Tuesday 7/16/13

Today I worked on my bottles some more before I went to pay my electricity bill. I have  pipe under the sink thats leaking so I was waiting for the landlord to come but he got stuck at work so I ended up watching a chick flick. After that I started cooking chicken. I am on a healthy kick do I get ready for my carnival costume. Speaking of that I decided to join Move ur Mas, its a six week boot camp to loose a few extra pounds. Its maybe 100 women working out to some of the best instructors that the gym has to offer, so we do cardio, dance, and other stuff. It was lots of fun.  I think after carnival I will join that gym its close to my work. Any ways when I got home it was time to get ready for bed.

Day # 173 Tango lesons

7/15/13

Although I went to the beach yesterday I got asked to go with one of the peace corps girls so I decided to go agin. we had I would say some much needed girl time. Before I went to the beach I went to this place called Marketing Board, they have all kinds of produce, so I go their and got a bunch of bananas and mangos. I also signed up for Move Your Mas at the the gym. Its a six week count down to loose some last minuet waight before carnival. Its Tuesdays and Thursdays, its all kinds of workouts with the gym instructors. My Wednesday dance teachers also works at that gym, thats how I found out about it. When I was done at the beach I came home and got ready for dance class. Tonight we had a special guest come and teach us how to tango, it was a very fun class. I had a good day.

Day # 172 Crazy hair at the beach

Sunday 7/15/13

Today was a very simple and lazy day, let me tell you those are very nice. I know that a lot of people think that I am vocation but I am not I am constantly working my mind and body. It does take a lot of mental effort to move to a new place and have to fit in. Constantly working every part of my body. So when I get a chance to sleep, rest my mind and re-energize its an opportunity that I take. I slept in and when I got up I took my time to clean a it around the house. When I was done I deiced to go to the beach an collect some more sea glass. I took the puppy as well. He is like a little fish, when you put him in the water he is off to the shore, but when I was laying in the water close to the shore he would come over and play with me, he was so cute he didn't know what to do with is feet so he splashed a lot. Then He decided that he was going to curl up in the towel on the beach and go to sleep. He stayed their while I played with the water and my hair. I had a grate time just relaxing. Then I walked home and got ready to go back to that beach for the sunday night fet (Party). I had a lot of fun their listening to music and dancing with some of my friends. I walked home from their as a group. It was a long day but a lot of fun.

Day #171 Carnival costumes

Saturday 7/13/13

This morning I woke up and got ready to go get measurements taken for my carnival costume. I sounds like it is just me with three other people two boys and one other girl. I am so exited to, I'm playing seaweed this year for pretty mass. Its going to be a grate first time at carnival for me. After that I headed up to Gren Vill to have lunch with a friends family. It was really nice to just relax in the country and eat a nice meal with good people. We had corn beef with pasta, salted ham and juice for lunch. After lunch my friends mom french braided my hair. I like it when my hair is breaded but I don't find cornrows to be all that impressive on me. When We got back from Gren Vill we got ready and headed down to the latin party. Their was no on their, so the four of us sat and talked about the latest news in Grenada. it was fun, thank goodness we got a ride home because we were planning on walking back as a group but its a bit of a walk. So that was nice. It was a good long day full of different people.

Day # 170 Social networking assistance

7/12/13 Friday

One of my friends has been asking me to help him make an email address, Facebook and Skype. I didn't realize but helping him and other people understand how these social networking places work and how to use them is helping them become more knowledgeable of computers, and whats going on around them. The email address can be used for professional use and keeping in touch with people. I have also been helping one of the other peace corps volunteers create a blog, use it and understand it.  After that I went to the park with the puppy and ran around the track with him and played soccer for a bit. When I got home I made a big salad, it was good. I think I am in for the night.

Day # 169 Day # 2 Training Classroom Management

7/11/13

Today was long as well but we talked about some interesting subjects. We took a good long timespan to talk about some of the problems that we have had in the classroom and what we needed help on. Mine was so general because I was not a teacher and I am learning everything as I go. I did get some advice and found some new strategies that I can use in my class such as positive rewarding, helping create good relationships using simple thing such as greeting kids at the door. The last session of training we got to meet the new Peace Corps Response Volunteer and she went over gender based violence and some of the statistics in Grenada. It was very interesting. We got to have lunch agin from my host mothers restraint so that was nice. She made such big meals for us. When I got home I was so tiered so I stayed home and watched a movie before bed.

Day # 168 Quarter Mark Training

Wednesday 7/10/13

Today was a very long day in the training room. Although it was nice to have AC!!!!!! We went over resiliency. I think that was one of the best subjects that we could have gone over. We discussed stresses in and out of the work environment and ways that we can help fix stress, or see signs of it. After that we talked about how are first 4 months as a PCV was going. It was a good day in training and the Peace Corps bought us lunch from my host mothers restaurant so that was fun.  It was also nice to see everyone and catch up on old times. I did not go to GrenVill for my work out I was so existed.

Day # 167 Tropical Storm watch

Today is Tuesday July 9th and I was supposed to have training today with my counter  parts, but do to the tropical storm watch I was placed on stand fast witch means that I am not to leave my house unless otherwise instructed by the Peace Corps. So I spent most of my morning trying to get a hold of my counter part to let her know that everything was canceled. The rest of my day was simple, I didn't do anything exiting. People take hurricanes very seriously all over the Caribbean, even though the hurricane warning was not for Grenada they felt it would be better to have us all ready to move if something did happen. I thats a good precaution to have.

Day # 166 Chocolate adventure

Monday 7/8/13

Grate day. Today started off with me and Lyndon going catching a bus up to Gren Vill from their we had to take another bus to Belmont Estate where they make the chocolate. We had never taken the tour so we decided to do that. It was so much fun, watching the proses and tasting organic, local chocolate.  They had the original coco drying houses. They have trays that slide in and out so they can dry in the sun and hide from the rain. The newer coco been drying house has inside drying racks. The coco beens go threw several steps before they become chocolate, harvesting, sorting, aging, drying, peeling, and ground into past. In the old days they used to do a coco dance with the beens in a pot so they could get the shells off. The estate also has a few animals. A parrot named Rainbow that can talk, some turtles and baby monkeys. The monkey where so sweet wanted to hold hands and play with my watch. We got to taste the goat cheese that is made their as well. When we where done we got a huge chef chocolate bar and headed to catch the bus agin, we were off to the Rivers Rum Factory. I was so exited to bring Lyndon their because he had never been, and rum is a big part of the culture down here. The factory is very old and is still working. The rum has such a high percent of alcohol that some of them can not even be taken on a plain because they are so flammable. Anyways they use the river to create power thats where they get the name rivers rum from. Also Rivers Rum is owned by three local people who employ ninety permeant people. It was a grate day we packed are own lunch and ate along the way. On the way home I got a phone call from another pvc and we were on tropical storm warning. So that was a little bit scary but I knew that was less than a hurricane and it might not even make it all the way to Grenada and sure enough it didn't. It did rain a lot. Fantastic day in the sun and not even a sun burn. I loved taking a local to a place that he had never been before. Its really a good cultural exchange.

Day # 165 He can swim

Sunday 7/7/13

Today was really nice outside so I decided to go to the each with my friend and the puppy. When we got to the beach we started collecting sea glass and we found so much, it was grate. I feel like I am finally starting to get a lot for my mosaic for my special ed school. Any ways when we where done we jumped in the water with are cloths on to cool off and we decided to take the puppy in. To my surprise he swam right to shore. WOW was I surprised that he could do that. Its like he knew how to swim from the moment he was born on an island. It makes me so happy that he can swim though. He stayed with us the hole time. He did get a bit cold and tried to get inside of my peruse because when he was small I would put him in it when he was to tiered to walk. It was kind of funny. When I got home I went to the store for some small stuff. The store in town has a big restaurant on top so I went up to see what the karaoke was like that they have some times. It was interesting but good. When I got home it was time for dinner and a movie  before bed.

Day # 164 BBQ Pig Tails

Saturday 7/6/13

Most of my day was spent getting ready for the BBQ. I had to got to the store and find pig tails and chicken wings. I also decided to make deviled eggs and pasta salad. All of the people that I invited had never had a deviled egg before so that made making them all that much funner. Then I took all of the stuff up to the roof were we would be having the cook out. I had forgotten to buy lighter fluid so I had to light it the old fashion way, news paper. Not to many people came, I had about 4 people come over two from the dance group and some other friends. It was relaxing I brought the computer up stairs so we could listen to music. All of my friends loved the puppy he was the star of the night, hes so cute. We where up on the roof for a good long time. It was the first time that I got to use my grill and it worked out grate. So now I can grill all kinds of things on it.

Day # 163 Party at the US Embassy of Grenada

Friday 7/5/13

I had no school today because the last day for the kids was yesterday. So I relaxed around the house for a bit before I went over to one of the other Peace Corps and helped him with his blog. It was nice to see what their house was like and spend some time with them, they live so close but I don't see them much because they work a lot and so do I. We got picked up for the part at the Grenada Embassy. It was such a nice diner all of us Peace Corps where their and the food was grate. They had servers with finger foods, (Pigs in a blanket, shrimp, potato salad). For dinner we had more finger food type things with cup cakes, all kinds of cup cakes cheeses cake, banana nut, and chocolate. It was a very nice evening out. When we where done we took a van to the beach and hung out for a while before we went in one of the local clubs Fantasia. It was a lot of fun cutting loose with the other PCV.

Day # 162 Awords

Thursday 7/4/13

Today is the last day od school for the kids, so the teachers put together a little ceremony for the kids. Some of the kids are moving up to a new level and others just got recognition for all of the hard work that they did during the term. It was nice to see how exited they got when they received their certificates and little gifts. They got some paper and pencils. I was impressed with some of the entertainment that the kids provided for us as well. They recited poems, danced, and read books. The teachers at this school have worked here a very long time and try the best that they can to provide the best well being for all of the kids. From the short time that I have been here I have seen practice for dance, singing, cooking, all kinds of things. Its amazing. I like my school  and I can't wait for the next term to start back up. The rest of the day was lazy no dance class, I took another nap and started working on painting bottles again.

Day #161 fun day

Wednesday 7/ 3/13

Today is Kids fun day, the school got a jumping castell for the kids and had snacks and games. The older kids went on a small hike and the younger kids played pin the tail on the donkey and jumped in the castell. It was nice for the kids because some of the family's was their and the teachers where having fun as well. I think that was a grate idea to have an end of the year celebration for the kids. I took lots of pictures or the kids having fun. I took the kids who needed supervision, or had medical conditions into the jumping castle. They had a lot of much deserved fun. After work I went to the immigration office and submitted my work visa, that took a little bit of time but not to bad. When I got home I took a very long nap, before I got up for dinner. I needed that bit of rest.

Day # 160 Pin the tail on the donkey

Tuesday 7/2/13

This  week is the last week of school for the kids so I was asked to make a pin a tail on the donkey for the fun day tomorrow. I had the kids help me color it and cut it out. When I was done with that I started to work on home work assignment for my training next week. It was just a lot of organizing. I have to work on a ten minute presentation on the community I work in, things that it has, needed and could be improved on. It was a relaxing day at school. When I got home it was a normal night cooking and cleaning before I laid down to watch a movie.

Day # 159 COLOR ME

Monday 7/1/13

Today was a good day I had a delightful group of three girls in level 3 who decided they wanted to make butterflies like the other class did. Last time I worked with them they completed the projects so fast I had to come up with more for them to do, so I decided to add a bit to make their butterflies more creative. I had the girls decorate the paper before they cut out the hand prints and body. They did a grate job and really enjoyed it. After work I headed to the peace corps office to collect my work visa. I thought it would be nice to take the puppy on a walk with me, and my boss got to meet him. When I was walking home I ran into one of the young boys that lives in my area. He remembered the puppy. we were walking in the same direction and we got to talking. He was out getting his hair cut for his graduation on Tuesday. He will be heading into secondary school, thats like high school in the states. I asked him if he was exited and he said that he was scared. I didn't expect that answer from him. I told him that the first few weeks would be a bit hard but soon he would grow accustomed to all of the new people and teachers. I also told him to stick with it because it will pay off in the end. I asked him what he wanted to be when he gets older and he said a heart surgeon, this young man impresses me. I am so glad that he was comfortable enough to talk to me about some of his fears. I hope more people feel that was and I can be of some help to them. When I got home I worked on the Peace Corps 2013 survey. This helps the Peace Corps understand where we feel comfortable or wish we had some more training. I think that its a grate way for the PC to get feedback. From their it was late and I headed to bed.

Day # 158 UFO

Sunday 6/30/13

Today was a good day I some work around the house and then called my host mother to see if we were going to have lunch today. She hadn't cooked and was going to go to a church event so I didn't end up going over to here house. I did take the puppy to the beach and met up with some friends. I had so much fun listening to the local music and watching some of the soca stars from town perform their songs. Their was a lot of people on the beach this sunday, I think thats because its getting close to carnival. I was so exited when I saw the jabjabs bringing out the paint for people to throw on one another. I got my self a cup of lime green paint because that part of town is the UFO group. It was a blast. I cant wait for carnival to come.
